Multi-lingual feature name testing
Problem statement
The end-of unit lessons in Babbel aim to recap what was covered in the previous lessons. The current learning content naming of this lesson as a "review" is confusing, as there is also a "review" section in the app which focuses on spaced repetition reviewing.
While English has a bigger range of wording to choose from, the other localisation languages don't.
Process & testing
I collaborated closely with the localisation team, and the German and Spanish translators were able to team up with me to help brainstorm names that would be possible to use on all our three languages.
Then I proceeded to test two feature name variants in these three languages.
This was the first (and so far only) time this has been done at Babbel.
We tested the following options on Usability Hub focusing on understanding of the term.
English: Recap vs Progress Check
German: Üben vs Fortschritt prüfen
Spanish: Practica vs Compuebra tu progreso
The results were clear and Recap/Uben/Practica scored best in terms of understandability of what the feature actually does.
Impact & next steps
The new feature name was rolled
out with the team as part of a bigger
initiative to unitise all learning content.
